Breakthrough Energy Makes First Catalyst Funding in LanzaJet

Breakthrough Energy Announces First Catalyst Project Funding in $50 Million Grant to LanzaJet for the World’s First Alcohol-to-Jet Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) Plant.

Seattle, Washington – Breakthrough Energy announced that its first Catalyst project funding will go to LanzaJet’s Freedom Pines Fuels sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) plant in Soperton, GA in the form of a $50 million grant. Breakthrough Energy Catalyst is a unique program that brings together corporate and philanthropic organizations to accelerate the deployment of essential technologies by funding key first-of-a-kind commercial-scale projects.

Projected to be operational in 2023, LanzaJet’s Freedom Pines Fuels project is the firm’s first commercial-scale SAF plant and will be the first in the world to produce Alcohol-to-Jet SAF, which will lower emissions by at least 70% compared to fossil jet fuel. Once fully operational, this plant will play a critical role in scaling SAF production and bringing lower-cost sustainable fuels to market. The plant is expected to produce nine million gallons of SAF and one million gallons of renewable diesel annually, roughly doubling current SAF production in the U.S. Construction of the plant will enable the significant scale-up of LanzaJet’s technology within the U.S. and globally, with subsequent projects already in the planning phase in North America, Europe, and Asia that, together, would produce more than one billion gallons of SAF annually.

First-of-a-kind projects for emerging technologies often struggle to access low-cost capital because they have high green premiums and frequently face unforeseen challenges and costs, especially in the current inflationary environment. By providing capital to these types of early commercial facilities, Catalyst funding can reduce risk for follow-on investments and accelerate the deployment of clean technologies. In this case, Freedom Pines Fuels’ Catalyst grant filled a funding gap and will enable the plant to maintain its current development timeline.

Importantly, the grant will also spur further SAF innovation by helping create a new market for scalable, low-carbon ethanol from sustainable sources by setting the expectation that the plant will transition to second-generation ethanol, including from waste-based feedstocks, by its fifth year. This transition will complement work LanzaJet is already doing to build SAF plants using second-generation ethanol in the U.K. and develop strategic partnerships to accelerate the advanced fuel’s development, of which there is currently little supply in the market.

“Breakthrough Energy Catalyst is a new way for the private sector to accelerate the clean energy transition by funding projects that will ensure essential climate solutions get to market on the timeline the world needs,” said Rodi Guidero, Executive Director, Breakthrough Energy & Managing Partner, Breakthrough Energy Ventures. “LanzaJet’s new sustainable aviation fuel plant could play a vital role in decarbonizing aviation while demonstrating how the jobs and businesses of the clean energy economy can power communities. We’re grateful to Catalyst’s partners, who understand climate leadership means supporting the technologies that will eliminate emissions and that solving our climate challenges will require nothing less than mobilizing the world’s economic engine to build a net-zero future.”

“LanzaJet is grounded in innovation, and we work every day with a sense of urgency to address our global climate challenge,” said Jimmy Samartzis, LanzaJet CEO. “To maximize our impact and scale our technology to deliver significant quantities of sustainable aviation fuel worldwide, partnerships matter. We have a real opportunity on our doorstep to significantly scale-up and globally deploy our technology, and we wouldn’t be able to build this plant as quickly or affordably without Breakthrough Energy’s Catalyst grant, which reduced our total cost of capital and is critical to reducing emissions and accelerating the pace of bringing SAF to the global market.”

Aviation accounts for approximately 2-3% of global greenhouse gas emissions annually, and as a “drop-in” fuel, sustainable aviation fuels offer an important way to quickly decarbonize aviation with existing aircraft currently in use around the world. Produced from a variety of low-carbon, sustainable feedstocks such as agricultural waste, municipal solid waste, energy crops, or carbon captured from industrial processes or ambient air, SAF is a like-kind replacement for traditional jet fuel and is compatible with existing aircraft and infrastructure. SAF can dramatically reduce lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs) compared to conventional fuel made from crude oil, while also significantly improving local air quality by reducing conventional air pollutants like particulate matter.

Breakthrough Energy’s Catalyst grant joins earlier supporters of LanzaJet’s Freedom Pines Fuels plant, which has received funding from the U.S. Department of Energy and the Microsoft Climate Innovation Fund, as well as investments from LanzaJet’s shareholders Mitsui & Co., Suncor Energy, LanzaTech, British Airways, and Shell. The plant is being built at a unique moment of opportunity for SAF. The recently signed Inflation Reduction Act includes tax credits that will help jumpstart production of SAF in the U.S. and make clean jet fuels more price competitive. It also includes $297 million for a grant program dedicated to scaling up clean aviation technologies, including SAF.

LanzaJet Affirms its Commitment to Scale Production of Sustainable Aviation Fuel to Accelerate the Energy Transition Globally

PITTSBURGH – (September 23, 2022) – Global leaders enabling the clean energy transition are attending the Clean Energy Ministerial and Action Forum in Pittsburgh this week. LanzaJet CEO Jimmy Samartzis is speaking on sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and its critical role in accelerating the energy transition.

LanzaJet, Inc. is a global leader in clean energy technology and production. The LanzaJet ProcessTM is a proprietary alcohol-to-jet technology which converts low-carbon ethanol into sustainable transportation fuels, including SAF and renewable diesel. LanzaJet is deploying its technology in the U.S. and globally, with the world's first ATJ biorefinery under construction in Georgia.

LanzaJet CEO, Jimmy Samartzis, speaking at the Global Clean Energy Action Forum, stated, "The momentum to facilitate the energy transition today is unlike ever before, and we have alignment across public and private sectors to build new industries and ensure the longevity and vitality of existing ones." He continued, "We've believed that we're at an inflection point, and it's now obvious that we are – technology is scaling, government policy is increasingly in place, consumers are demanding, and financiers are investing. Now is the time to catalyze the energy transition."

SAF is the aviation industry's primary solution for reaching net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. LanzaJet is partnering with investors, partners, and funders – All Nippon Airways, British Airways, LanzaTech, Microsoft, Mitsui & Co, Ltd., Suncor Energy, and Shell – to deploy its technology to rapidly increase the low-carbon supply of drop-in, SAF. LanzaJet's ambitions are anchored in more than 12 years of technology development and scale-up that started with LanzaTech and in partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy's Pacific Northwest National Lab (PNNL). LanzaJet has continued to make substantial progress:

  • LanzaJet Freedom Pines Fuels, the world's first ATJ biorefinery in Soperton, GA, is expected to be operational in 2023.
  • Alongside the White House in announcing the SAF Grand Challenge in 2021, LanzaJet announced it would strive to fulfill 1 billion gallons of the 3-billion-gallon U.S. target.
  • Since 2020, LanzaJet has announced projects totaling 300 million gallons of SAF and renewable diesel per year including in the United States, the United Kingdom, Sweden, Central Europe, Canada, and Japan.

  • The LanzaJet ATJ platform provides substantial flexibility by working with various technologies on the front end to create low-carbon ethanol and to continue to build a waste-based ethanol industry.

  • All LanzaJet ATJ projects use low-carbon ethanol feedstocks including ethanol that leverages carbon capture and sequestration and sources such as woody waste, renewable energy, and industrial waste gases.

The aviation industry is responsible for approximately 3% of global carbon dioxide emissions. In 2021, airlines across the globe together committed to reaching net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. Commercial aviation uses more than 100 billion gallons of fossil-derived jet fuel a year, with SAF accounting for roughly 30 million gallons in 2021.

In 2021, LanzaJet committed to fulfilling one-third of the U.S. target by enabling the production of 1 billion gallons of SAF by 2030 using its industry-leading ATJ technology. As the U.S. prepares to launch its Sustainable Aviation Fuel Grand Challenge Roadmap, LanzaJet reaffirms its commitment and doubles down on its promise.

Mr. Samartzis further noted, "As we prepare for the production of SAF in Georgia and elsewhere in the U.S., in addition to plants planned in Europe, we are setting the foundation for global deployment of LanzaJet's technology and widespread production of sustainable aviation fuel over the next several years. The public and private sectors are working together to build this new industry and to ensure a healthier planet for our children. We will work collectively to secure our nation's supply chain and accelerate the production and use of sustainable, low-carbon fuels for the aviation industry."

Mr. Samartzis is speaking during the first-ever Global Clean Energy Action Forum, a joint convening of the 13th Clean Energy Ministerial and the 7th Mission Innovation ministerial, and is available to comment on the meetings and other issues around innovation, public-private partnership, clean energy, and SAF.

LanzaJet Applauds New Inflation Reduction Act Law

LanzaJet Applauds Signing into Law the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) to Support Building a New Sustainable Fuels Industry, Enable Decarbonization, and Advance the US Towards 3 billion Gallons of Sustainable Aviation Fuel Production by 2030.

CHICAGO – (August 16, 2022) – The passage of The Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) will catalyze a new domestic Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) industry to decarbonize the aviation sector. LanzaJet, Inc., a leading SAF producer, and technology provider through its proprietary Alcohol-to-Jet (ATJ) process, applauds the IRA's passage. It recognizes the critical role this legislation will play in enabling aggressive scale-up of SAF, supporting an ecosystem of innovation and transformation in aviation.

The aviation industry and the Administration share a joint goal under the SAF Grand Challenge of achieving 3 billion gallons of domestic SAF production by 2030 and 100% SAF by 2050. The IRA provides critical policy tools to scale domestic SAF production to achieve these ambitious goals rapidly. LanzaJet committed in 2021 to fulfilling one-third of the U.S. target by enabling the production of 1 billion gallons of SAF by 2030 using its industry-leading technology, which converts ethanol into drop-in SAF and renewable diesel. The U.S. market provides significant access to low-carbon, sustainable feedstocks and waste sources that can be converted into ethanol and from ethanol into sustainable transportation fuels.

"The U.S. is poised to lead the world in the energy transition, and this legislation is a leap forward in advancing energy security, economic development, and climate action. LanzaJet applauds Congress for leading through action, and the inclusion of a performance-based Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) tax credit positions the U.S. to lead in developing a new, global sustainable fuels industry. We look forward to working with Congress and industry leaders to accelerate the transition to clean energy," stated Jimmy Samartzis, CEO of LanzaJet. He continued, "We've been at an inflection point in building this new industry. The passage of the Inflation Reduction Act allows U.S. manufacturing, agriculture, biofuel, oil and gas, aviation, and financial industries to double-down, work together, and advance the development of the sustainable fuels industry."

LanzaJet has been a strong advocate and industry leader on the SAF provisions in the IRA, which includes a new performance based SAF tax credit. This innovative feedstock- and technology-neutral credit provides an incentive of up to $1.75/gallon for SAF to achieve a 100% lifecycle GHG reduction that will drive investment in the high-performing SAF technologies like ATJ our nation will need to decarbonize the aviation sector. Access to low-cost capital is one of the most significant barriers to the rapid deployment of SAF technologies that have been proven but not yet deployed at a commercial scale. The IRA's $245 million in complementary grant funding for SAF projects will further de-risk investment and speed the deployment of next-generation SAF technologies.

LanzaJet's investors and partners recognize and applaud Congress for enacting a suite of foundational and innovative SAF policies that will ensure continued U.S. leadership in the emerging SAF industry and are already working to transform the nation's economy. LanzaJet works in collaboration with its investors, partners, and funders, including LanzaTech, Mitsui & Co, Ltd., Suncor Energy, British Airways, Shell, Microsoft, and All Nippon Airways, to develop the U.S. SAF industry. The IRA's SAF provisions will enable continued advancement and development of projects using LanzaJet's ATJ technology, over 300 million gallons of which have already been publicly announced.

Upon President Biden signing this bill into law, LanzaJet's investors reinforced the importance of this legislation in building a new SAF industry and in working together to continue to expand SAF production:

LanzaTech's CEO and LanzaJet Board Chair, Jennifer Holmgren, CEO, said, "This is a critical time for hard-to-abate sectors, including aviation. By enacting historic sustainable aviation fuel policies within the Inflation Reduction Act, the new tax credits and aviation grant programs will provide critical support for spurring a new domestic industry in the U.S., which can lower emissions, create new American jobs, and improve energy security and show U.S. global leadership."

Mr. Toru Iijima, Chief Operating Officer of the Energy Solutions Business Unit of Mitsui & Co., Ltd., stated, "Mitsui welcomes the passage of the Inflation Reduction Act that will further support production and use of SAF in the United States. We look forward to jointly building the SAF industry in strong partnership with LanzaJet and other stakeholders and to contributing to the decarbonization of the aviation industry."

Sir David King, world-renowned climate scientist, and technology leader, member of LanzaJet's Board of Directors, and former Chief Scientific Advisor to the United Kingdom and Head of the Government Office for Science, said, "The Inflation Reduction Act is a major step forward for the U.S. in combating climate change, the biggest challenge facing humanity today. The world is already experiencing extreme weather events causing enormous losses and costs. Speaking for the world, this Act is a potentially enormous step forward for the States to join Europe in taking a leading role in managing these threats and growing green economies. The SAF tax credit provisions in the Act and grant funding for SAF projects represent a critical step by the U.S. government in catalyzing the SAF industry to enable decarbonization of the aviation industry."

This partnership will utilize carbon capture and sequestration, renewable energy, and other innovative practices to bring lower-cost, low carbon-intensity sustainable aviation fuel, renewable diesel, and other sustainable hydrocarbons to the global market and help accelerate the decarbonization of various industries, including the tough to decarbonize aviation sector.

CHICAGO (FEBRUARY 10, 2022) -- Today, LanzaJet, a sustainable aviation fuel technology provider and producer, has entered into a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Marquis Sustainable Aviation Fuel (Marquis SAF) to construct a 120 million gallons per year integrated sustainable fuels plant in the U.S. using low-carbon intensity (CI) feedstocks to produce sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and renewable diesel via the LanzaJet™ Alcohol-to-Jet process.  The plant will employ on-site carbon capture and sequestration and renewable energy to produce SAF, resulting in a lifecycle greenhouse gas reduction of more than 70% compared to conventional jet fuel.

This first-of-a-kind fully integrated sustainable fuels production facility will be located in the Marquis Industrial Complex in Hennepin, Illinois, just two hours southwest of Chicago, on a 2,500-acre industrial site adjacent to the Illinois River. The facility is strategically positioned for global distribution via direct access to the Illinois River and proximity to vital pipelines to deliver sustainable fuels to Chicago O'Hare International Airport and Chicago Midway International Airport. The Marquis Industrial Complex also connects with a Class I railroad and multiple interstate highways.

"We strongly believe in the importance of taking action today to enable the decarbonization of industry, and our partnership with Marquis SAF is a clear example of putting this into practice. We're able to drive deeper GHG reductions in existing biofuel production, ensure a prosperous future for producers and farmers alike, and decarbonize the aviation sector by deploying low-carbon liquid fuels where they will be needed most in the future – and importantly where they will drive the largest climate and air quality benefits when also considering non-CO2 impacts" said Jimmy Samartzis, LanzaJet CEO. "This demonstrates the opportunity for the U.S. to produce meaningful volumes of sustainable aviation fuel at scale, transitioning feedstocks from the production of traditional biofuels into sustainable aviation fuel. SAF from existing sources alone could replace more than 50% of U.S. fossil jet fuel use. The key is low carbon intensity, where existing infrastructure is paired with carbon capture and sequestration and renewable energy. Marquis is doing exactly this and makes for a great partnership with LanzaJet."

Marquis recently announced a plan for the Marquis Industrial Complex to be the world's first carbon-neutral industrial complex with on-site access to carbon injection. "The partnership we now have in place with LanzaJet allows our company to advance low-carbon solutions to address the climate crisis," said Mark Marquis, CEO of Marquis SAF. "LanzaJet's ATJ technology will be fully integrated into our sustainable fuels plant with a focus on producing sustainable aviation fuel and renewable diesel. In addition, we are making investments in carbon capture, corn kernel fiber technology, and utilizing Marquis' proprietary ProCap system for the production of high protein feed and renewable corn oil in this new state-of-the-art facility. This will enable us to lead the decarbonization of the transportation sector in the years to come."

The partnership between these two Illinois headquartered companies will allow the Marquis Industrial Complex to lead in the development of sustainable fuels. The fully integrated SAF plant significantly expands the production of sustainable fuels in the U.S and places Illinois at the center of this expansion in building sustainable infrastructure that will help reduce carbon emissions. It serves as an example of the types of commercial plants and scale that can be developed across the U.S. LanzaJet recently announced its first plant in Georgia is expected to enter commercial operations in 2023. That plant will use low-CI, sustainably certified ethanol produced from waste sources and existing energy crops. Production of sustainable fuel made from low carbon intensity corn, in partnership with Marquis, is scheduled to begin engineering in 2022.

LanzaJet Secures $50M in Funding from Microsoft Climate Innovation Fund

LanzaJet partners with Microsoft Climate Innovation Fund to enable the transition towards net-zero sustainable fuels

CHICAGO (JANUARY 13, 2022) -- Today, LanzaJet, a sustainable fuels technology company and renewable fuels producer, announced it has secured financing for its Freedom Pines Fuels plant in Soperton, Georgia, through the Microsoft Climate Innovation Fund. The Microsoft Climate Innovation Fund has made a $50M investment to support the construction of LanzaJet's (and the world's) first alcohol-to-jet sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production plant. The innovative structure of Microsoft's financing will enable LanzaJet to bring lower-cost sustainable aviation fuel and renewable diesel to the global market.

LanzaJet is dedicated to accelerating the energy transition in sectors where decarbonization is hard, such as aviation. LanzaJet produces SAF and renewable diesel from low-carbon, sustainable ethanol sources. This investment also creates the opportunity for LanzaJet and the Microsoft Climate Innovation Fund to work together in enabling LanzaJet, through the Freedom Pines Fuels plant, to catalyze the market for 2nd generation, waste-based ethanol feedstock, demonstrating clear demand signals for ethanol that can achieve greater carbon reductions.

The construction of Freedom Pines Fuels is progressing as planned, even with supply chain, manufacturing, and labor shortages impacting the global economy. Fabrication of the plant is well underway; some modules are already completed and final site engineering is nearing completion. The LanzaJet Freedom Pines Fuels plant is expected to achieve mechanical completion this year and begin producing 10 million gallons of SAF and renewable diesel per year from sustainable ethanol, including from waste-based feedstocks, in 2023.

The investment was made as part of Microsoft's efforts to achieve its 2030 goal of becoming carbon negative and advancing a net-zero economy. It also allows Microsoft to access sustainable, renewable diesel for its data centers to enable Microsoft to further achieve its net-zero goals.

Demand for sustainable fuels is increasing, and governments like those in the United States and the United Kingdom are leading the transition by encouraging sustainable fuel production. The Biden administration set a goal for achieving net-zero aviation emissions by 2050, with the E.U. wanting to increase the amount of SAF blended to 63% by 2050. In September of 2021, the White House announced a target of 3 billion gallons of SAF produced per year by 2030. As part of that announcement, LanzaJet shared it would strive to achieve 1B gallons of SAF production in the US by 2030, significantly supporting US ambitions.

Private sector investment and government support are crucial to enabling the development and scale-up of new technologies to curb carbon emissions as the world tackles climate change. The collaboration between LanzaJet and the Microsoft Climate Innovation Fund demonstrates that such an innovative investment approach breaks down barriers by deploying new technologies, improves our nation's infrastructure, and creates new economic opportunities in rural communities. The development of LanzaJet’s Freedom Pines Fuels plant is also supported by funding from the U.S. Department of Energy Bioenergy Technologies Office.

LanzaJet continues to work with its founding investors to scale up the production of sustainable fuels to meet global demand and to enable the energy transition underway. Microsoft's financial support of LanzaJet joins other LanzaJet funders including LanzaTech, Inc., Suncor Energy Inc., Mitsui & Co., Ltd., British Airways, Shell, and All Nippon Airways – all who are working together to catalyze and build a new global market for sustainable fuels.

US Secretary of Energy Granholm and US Senator Ossoff Visit LanzaTech Innovation Hub in Georgia and Site of the World’s First LanzaJet Sustainable Fuels Plant

Visit highlights the potential of rural America to create domestic supplies of sustainable fuels and chemicals.

LanzaTech and LanzaJet welcomed Secretary of Energy Jennifer M. Granholm and Senator Jon Ossoff to the Freedom Pines Biorefinery in Soperton, Georgia.

The site is a center of research, development and scale-up for LanzaTech’s commercial carbon capture and utilization technology with a specialized biomanufacturing center producing the “secret sauce” that is shipped from the United States to commercial partners around the world.

LanzaTech has scaled and demonstrated multiple technologies at the site in partnership with the Department of Energy (DOE), DOE’s National Laboratories, and several industrial partners, including piloting a next generation bioreactor, making chemicals, and converting ethanol made from recycled waste gases into sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). This “recycled carbon” SAF was used on October 2, 2018 on a world first transatlantic flight from Orlando to London with Virgin Atlantic.

With the support from the Department of Energy, the site in Soperton has become a sustainable innovation hub, leveraging local talent to support domestic energy security and meet climate goals. Today, products can be found on store shelves manufactured with these technologies, including household cleaners and laundry detergents, packaging and soon textiles and fragrances.

As part of President Biden’s climate agenda, his Administration recently announced the Sustainable Aviation Grand Challenge, an ambitious commitment involving several federal departments and agencies to scale up production of SAF to 3 billion gallons per year by 2030. LanzaTech and LanzaJet pledged to produce a combined 1 billion gallons of SAF in the U.S. by 2030.

The first step will be a first-of-a-kind SAF facility called Freedom Pines Fuels, in Soperton. Producing 10 million gallons of SAF and renewable diesel per year from sustainably sourced ethanol from rural communities, the facility will use LanzaJet’s Alcohol to Jet (ATJ) technology, developed with Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL). There are also plans to install solar power production to provide renewable electricity to the entire site for all operations.

The ethanol sourced will be complemented by the ethanol produced from a pre-pilot facility utilizing CO2 and renewable hydrogen being built at the site.  This facility, which is also co-funded by the DOE, will demonstrate a potentially limitless supply of sustainable feedstocks for domestic SAF and diesel production right in the heart of Georgia. Argonne National Lab will be a life cycle assessment partner.

Suncor, British Airways, Boeing, Alaska Airlines, and All Nippon Airways (ANA) have already made commitments to purchase and use all the SAF and renewable diesel produced at this site.

The Soperton site currently employs over 30 people and continues to attract talent from the surrounding counties. It was recognized by the Heart of Georgia Transition Alliance, in 2019, for their support in employing individuals with vocational disabilities.

With the support of the DOE, the new Freedom Pines Fuels plant, which is in the late stages of development, will create an additional 30 permanent clean tech jobs and 200+ construction and engineering jobs.

Such public and private sector partnerships are essential for rapidly transitioning to a cleaner economy, in line with President Biden’s ambitious climate objectives.

Jennifer Holmgren, CEO of LanzaTech, said:

“We are grateful to President Biden, Secretary Granholm and Senator Ossoff for their commitment to a carbon-smart economy and partnering with the private sector to drive innovation. LanzaTech’s Biorefinery and LanzaJet’s ATJ plant show how public private partnerships can support scale up throughout America, including rural communities like Soperton.”

“If we are to meet our goals in mitigating the climate crisis, the private sector often needs government partnerships to accelerate technology from initial R&D to full-scale production and deployment, and that is what we are doing today with Secretary Granholm.”

“Soperton, Treutlen County, and rural communities like these also have a critical role to play in addressing climate change. They offer a rich supply of agricultural, and forestry wastes along with a large supply of renewable power for producing hydrogen, which are key feedstocks for LanzaTech’s gas fermentation process. With these key ingredients for our fermentation process, we will replace fossil fuels in the production of ethanol, SAF, chemicals, and other products we use in our daily lives, from right here in Middle Georgia.”

“We appreciate Sen. Ossoff’s leadership in working to ensure this project becomes the model of American innovation and how rural communities can seize one of our greatest global challenges, to create jobs and new market opportunities for sustainable economic growth. We also are grateful for the bipartisan support from local, state, and federal officials to help transform the Freedom Pines facility into a hub of innovation.”

“In making the transition to a carbon smart economy, it is vital to obtain bipartisan support for a plan that will create jobs and change the economies of our local communities. We are grateful to have Rep. Allen’s longstanding support and Sen. Warlock’s advocacy as an original cosponsor of the Sustainable Skies Act (S. 2263) that will help expedite the aviation industry’s transition to sustainable fuel.”

Secretary Jennifer M. Granholm, Department of Energy, said:

“LanzaTech is exactly the kind of innovation we need to slash emissions from tough-to-decarbonize industries like aviation. This site is what President Biden envisions in every pocket of the country through the Build Back Better Agenda.”

U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff said:

“Thank you to the team at LanzaTech and LanzaJet for your innovation, your investment in Georgia and hospitality. I believe Georgia should lead the nation in clean energy and renewable energy technology, and now LanzaTech and LanzaJet are leading the world in sustainable aviation fuel.”

Jimmy Samartzis, LanzaJet CEO, said:

“It’s clear that our global community must take action today to decarbonize society. The US is leading the way as an example of the effort required across the public and private sectors to innovate and build new industries to help our country and our global society transition to sustainable growth, sustainable travel, and a sustainable economy. President Biden, his Administration, and the US Congress have made decarbonizing aviation a priority. Today’s visit by Secretary of Energy Granholm and Senator Ossoff represents the joint work required across the executive and legislative branches, and in collaboration with the private sector. At LanzaJet, we’re committed to enabling the production of 1 billion gallons of sustainable aviation fuel in the US by 2030 which will enable local and national economic growth and international leadership in addressing climate change.

  • The third project involves capturing carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere and converting it into SAF via LanzaJet ATJ technology under LanzaTech and Carbon Engineering project AtmosFUEL.
  • If awarded, grants from Green Fuels, Green Skies competition would support all three projects for the early-stage development of UK SAF plants, including Feasibility and Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) project phases.

CHICAGO – (August 4, 2021) – LanzaJet™ Alcohol-to-jet (ATJ) technology will be deployed as part of three projects in the United Kingdom (UK) focused on the production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) that have been shortlisted for funding by the Department for Transport's Green Fuels, Green Skies competition - part of the Prime Minister's Ten Point Plan for a Green Industrial Revolution.

The first is in partnership with British Airways and Nova Pangaea Technologies to develop the first SAF production facility in the UK utilizing UK woody residues. This collaboration, known as "Project Speedbird," aims to bring on stream 100+ million litres of SAF per year by 2025 to meet the large SAF supply-demand gap in the UK and accelerate the aviation industry's drive for net-zero carbon emissions. According to the Air Transport Action Group, aviation is responsible for 12% of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from all transport sources.

The technology platform is based on Nova Pangaea's REFNOVA® process of converting lignocellulosic feedstocks, such as waste wood and biomass, into sustainable biocarbon, biochemicals, biopolymers, and drop-in for biofuels. LanzaJet's ATJ technology, developed by LanzaTech and US Department of Energy’s Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), will convert the ethanol to Synthetic Paraffinic Kerosene (SPK) and Synthetic Paraffinic Diesel (SPD), which are commonly referred to as SAF and renewable diesel. Leveraging the technologies from this partnership, the plant will convert wood waste to sustainable aviation fuel in the UK.  Recycling carbon from local UK wood waste helps decarbonize aviation and supports the production of sustainable aviation fuels in the UK.

The second project, known as Project DRAGON, which stands for Decarbonizing and Reimagining Aviation for the Goal Of Netzero, is for a separate SAF production facility in partnership with LanzaTech, which spun off LanzaJet in 2020. The facility will be in South Wales and will produce 100+ million litres per year of predominantly ATJ-SPK. The plant will use ethanol feedstock produced from a variety of waste sources, and the facility will have the ability to also use ethanol produced from local steel mill waste gases via LanzaTech’s gas fermentation platform.

The SAF from this facility will be used by UK-based airlines, including Virgin Atlantic, who used the first batch of LanzaTech jet fuel from recycling industrial waste gases on a transatlantic flight from Orlando, Florida, USA to London, UK in 2018.

The third project, AtmosFUEL, is a first-of-a-kind project to create SAF from atmospheric CO2.  The project will investigate the feasibility of a large-scale, commercial ATJ facility in the UK that will produce more than 100 million litres of SAF each year. It involves capturing CO2 from the atmosphere via Carbon Engineering’s technology, converting it to sustainable ethanol through LanzaTech’s technology, and finally using that ethanol to produce SAF via the LanzaJet ATJ technology.  The proposed facility is targeted to be operational by the end of the decade and will demonstrate how this clean infrastructure can be rolled out across the UK and elsewhere to deliver significant aviation emission reductions, while creating thousands of jobs and cascading economic benefits.

All three projects will work to accelerate the implementation of these SAF plants in the UK in time for the mandatory SAF Blend Rates starting in 2025 that are currently in discussion, including a 10% blend rate in 2030.

Jimmy Samartzis, LanzaJet CEO, said:

"We are at an inflection point in catalyzing the sustainable future of the aviation sector through the development and use of sustainable aviation fuel. The support of governments, such as that of the United Kingdom, is necessary to advance the development of this new industry which is scaling to help advance the decarbonization of airlines in the UK and across the globe. These three projects will meaningfully enable the aviation industry to move closer to achieving net-zero emissions while also creating the opportunity for responsible growth of the industry. These projects create local jobs, promote the development of a waste-based feedstock industry, and enable the UK to stand out as a leader in the global community in advancing the development of leading technologies and a sustainable aviation sector.”

“We look forward to the continued collaboration between industry and government to accelerate the scale-up of SAF production. We are grateful to be shortlisted for funding from the Department for Transport and are proud to continue our work with the Prime Minister's Jet Zero Council".

LanzaJet Joins the World Economic Forum’s Global Innovators Community

CHICAGO, July 7, 2021 – LanzaJet, a leader in developing sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), announced today that it had become a member of the World Economic Forum’s Global Innovators Community, a select and invitation-only group of the world’s most promising start-ups and scale-ups that are on the forefront of ethical technological and business model innovation.

“At LanzaJet, we set out to preserve the world and the opportunity for future generations to experience it fully and thrive,” Jimmy Samartzis, LanzaJet CEO, said. “As a member of the Global Innovators Community, we will work directly on the Forum’s Shaping the Future of Mobility and help accelerate the global transition to safer, cleaner, and more inclusive transportation systems.”

As our world addresses global challenges, the World Economic Forum’s Global Innovators Community is a collective of innovative companies working on solutions to our world’s most significant challenges. The aviation industry contributes 3% of global carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions annually. The United Nations expects airplane emissions of CO2 to triple by 2050. While the aviation industry is committed to using sustainable fuel, a recent WEF report published in November found that although enough sustainable feedstocks exist to power the entire industry on SAF, the production plants currently planned worldwide would only have the capacity to produce 4 million tons annually each year, around 1% of projected fuel demand.

“Gaining access to sustainable aviation fuel is critical to helping the aviation industry reduce the emissions from airplanes and the traditional fossil fuels used to power them,” said Samartzis. Earlier this year, LanzaJet announced that its construction of the first Alcohol-to-Jet (AtJ) facility of its kind in Soperton, Georgia, is already underway. The plant is expected to start up in 2022 when it will begin to produce 10 million gallons per year of sustainable fuels – SAF and renewable diesel.

Schneider Introduces Bill to Decarbonize Aviation, Fulfill Climate Commitments

SUSTAINABLE SKIES ACT WOULD BOOST INCENTIVES TO USE SUSTAINABLE AVIATION FUEL WHICH CUTS AVIATION EMISSIONS BY 50% OR MORE

WASHINGTON - (May 20, 2021) - Today, Congressman Brad Schneider (IL-10) introduced the Sustainable Skies Act, new legislation to fight carbon emissions and promote the transition to sustainable aviation fuel. The bill, co-lead by Reps. Dan Kildee (MI-05) and Julia Brownley (CA-26), was supported at introduction by climate groups like the Environmental Defense Fund and the World Wildlife Fund, and by industry groups, like United Airlines, Airlines for America, LanzaJet, and the Airline Pilots Association. The bill is also supported by Third Way, the Rocky Mountain Institute, and the Progressive Policy Institute. Senator Sherrod Brown is expected to introduce a Senate companion bill in the coming days.

Today, air travel accounts for as much as 2.5% of global carbon emissions. The Sustainable Skies Act aims to cut aviation’s carbon emissions in half.

The legislation would create a tax credit starting at $1.50 per gallon for blenders that supply sustainable aviation fuel with a demonstrated 50% or greater lifecycle estimate reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared to standard jet fuel. Eligible fuels would need to follow the sustainability criteria established by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) or methodology the bill requires the Environmental Protection Agency to determine is as stringent as ICAO’s. In order to incentivize innovation and greater reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, the legislation provides an additional credit of $0.01/gallon for each percentage the fuel reduces emissions over 50% -- for instance, an SAF that reduces emissions by 70% would receive a credit of $1.70/gallon.

To ensure environmental integrity, the bill includes several safeguards. It excludes palm fatty acid distillates (PFAD) as an eligible feedstock due to its environmental record. The bill also would require eligible SAFs to utilize the full suite of ICAO sustainability criteria, including accounting for both aggregate attributional core lifecycle emissions and the induced land use change.

“The best way for America to confront the massive challenge of climate change is by making our businesses and lifestyles cleaner. The Sustainable Skies Act will halve carbon emissions without forcing Americans to cut back on commerce, a win-win for the next generation and for today’s travelers. Implementing sustainable aviation fuels is the single most important step the aviation industry can take to combat climate change, and I’m proud to take this legislation to the House with the support of both Illinois-based companies, like United and LanzaJet, and climate change champions, like the Environmental Defense Fund and the World Wildlife Fund,” said Congressman Brad Schneider (IL-10).

“Climate change is a real and present danger to our country, and we must do all we can do to address it. In my home state of Michigan, we have already seen the negative effects the climate crisis is having on the Great Lakes,” said Congressman Dan Kildee. “That’s why I am proud to support the Sustainable Skies Act. This legislation promotes more sustainable and responsible fuels for airplanes so they can reduce their emissions. I thank Representatives Schneider, Brownley, unions, the airline industry and environmental community for coming together to work on this bill.”

“Sustainable aviation fuel is the aviation industry’s best opportunity to cut its carbon emissions for the foreseeable future,” said Congresswoman Julia Brownley. “I am pleased to join Rep. Schneider and Rep. Kildee in introducing the Sustainable Skies Act, because federal investment in this nascent industry is critically important if the aviation sector is going to reach its goal of net-zero emissions by 2050. The broad coalition of environmentalists, airlines, sustainable fuel producers, and labor in support of this bill demonstrates how SAF can be both a win for the environment and a win for our economy.”

“Meeting the challenge of climate change requires dramatically reducing emissions across all parts of our economy. The United States can be a leader in the shift to cleaner, more sustainable fuels that will create good-paying jobs across the aviation  sector, and I’m pleased that industry and environmental stakeholders are able to come together to support this legislation,” said Senator Sherrod Brown.

“The use of high-integrity sustainable aviation fuels is critical to reducing aviation’s climate impact. But the high costs of sustainable aviation fuels compared with fossil fuels are a barrier to their production and use. The bill proposed by Reps. Schneider, Brownley, and Kildee aims to address this issue, while upholding rigorous international environmental standards and rewarding fuels with higher environmental integrity – the bigger the fuel’s climate benefit, the bigger the tax credit,” said Elizabeth Gore, Senior Vice President of Political Affairs, Environmental Defense Fund.

“The Sustainable Skies Act is a critical step on our path to decarbonize United and the broader aviation industry. For more than a decade, United has been a leader in developing sustainable air travel, purchasing more SAF than any other airline, and we are proud to champion this milestone legislation,” said Scott Kirby, CEO of United Airlines. “This is one of the many initiatives moving us closer to zeroing out the emissions generated from flying and I applaud Reps. Schneider, Kildee, and Brownley for their bold leadership on this critical issue.”

“In addition to improving aircraft efficiency and reducing excess flying, scaling use of sustainable aviation fuel is critical for the aviation sector to reduce its fair share of carbon emissions for a safe climate future. Congress can jumpstart new production of these critical fuels by passing the Sustainable Skies Act." – John Holler, Senior Program Officer, Climate Cooperation & Sustainable Fuels at World Wildlife Fund

“This measure will go a long way toward improving the cost-competitiveness of sustainable aviation fuel, which is crucial to expanding its production and deployment as U.S. airlines work to eliminate their net carbon emissions by 2050,” said Airlines for America President and CEO Nicholas E. Calio. “The U.S. airline industry has set a goal of making 2 billion gallons of environmentally friendly SAF available for U.S. carriers to use in 2030, and supportive measures like this will enable us to achieve that goal.”

"From our flight deck window, airline pilots have a rare perspective on the earth. We see the droughts, forest fires, and storms that are linked to climate change, but our view is also shaped by practices and policies that already allow us to contribute to a cleaner environment. Airline pilots are eager to do even more to protect our planet, and that's why ALPA supports The Sustainable Skies Act,” said Cpt. Bob Fox, First Vice President of the Air Lines Pilot Association. “We applaud Reps. Schneider, Kildee and Brownley, and urge Congress to immediately pass this important legislation."

"We’re on the precipice of catalyzing the development of a robust domestic Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) industry that will position the US as a leader in renewables and allow our global society to make significant progress towards decarbonization. With a long-term, performance-based Blender's Tax Credit for SAF, we will be able to invest in and produce SAF at scale across the U.S.,” said Jimmy Samartzis, CEO of LanzaJet. “The tax credit will significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions from aviation, improve local air quality and enable a path to net-zero emissions for the aviation industry. We applaud Rep. Schneider, Rep. Kildee, and Rep. Brownley for their leadership in enabling a cleaner and more sustainable future for our country and for aviation."

“Our best bet for tackling the growing climate impacts of air travel is with sustainable aviation fuel. With travel expected to rebound post-pandemic, now is the time to ensure the industry comes back stronger and cleaner than it was before,” said Josh Freed, Senior Vice President for the Climate and Energy Program at Third Way. “The Sustainable Skies Act will help reduce the price of the very cleanest fuels—such as those produced from sustainable biomass, waste streams, and direct air capture—so we can scale up domestic production quickly and put American farmers and manufacturers to work creating a modern, carbon-free future for aviation.”

“Passing the Sustainable Skies Act is the single most important near-term action Congress can take to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from aviation, which represents 3% of all U.S. emissions,” said Paul Bledsoe, energy fellow and strategic advisor at the Progressive Policy Institute. “Right now, sustainable aviation fuels are not widely available, so durable tax incentives are needed to jumpstart much higher production and use, and to reduce long-term costs so the credit can be phased out after a decade. These fuels derived from sustainable feedstocks can reduce emissions by as much as 80% over conventional jet fuels with no loss in performance. This crucial legislation should be included in infrastructure bills Congressional tax committees are writing, and passed into law at the earliest opportunity.”

“Reducing greenhouse gas emissions and pollution from aircraft is one of the biggest challenges facing the aviation industry and is a priority for Neste, one of the world’s most sustainable companies,” said Jeremy Baines, President of Neste US. “Neste commends Reps. Schneider (D-IL), Kildee (D-MI) and Brownley (D-CA) for showing leadership through the introduction of their sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) blenders tax credit legislation, a practical solution that can be immediately deployed, accelerate the production and use of SAF, and help ensure that Americans can keep flying both affordably and with a much smaller carbon footprint.”

“Decarbonizing aviation is one of the most pressing challenges to solving the climate crisis. However, thanks to innovative biotechnology and biofuel producers, realizing green aviation is possible. This bill to incentivize the production and use of sustainable aviation fuels is critical if we are to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the U.S. transportation sector and truly address climate change. It will bolster rural economies across the country by creating new revenue streams for agricultural producers and value-added markets for waste products. BIO thanks U.S. Representatives Schneider, Kildee, and Brownley for the introduction of the Sustainable Skies Act and we look forward to working with lawmakers as it moves through Congress,” said Dr. Michelle McMurry-Heath, President and CEO of the Biotechnology Innovation Organization (BIO).

"The general aviation industry recognizes Reps. Schneider, Kildee and Brownley for their significant leadership in advancing the production and development of sustainable aviation fuel," said Pete Bunce, James Viola, Tim Obitts and Ed Bolen, leaders of the General Aviation Manufacturers Association, Helicopter Association International, National Air Transportation Association and National Business Aviation Association.  "SAF is critical to the future of general aviation, which supports 1.2 million American jobs and $247 billion in economic output."
