LanzaJet to Participate in Nature Positive Initiative’s State of Nature Metrics Pilot Study

Chicago, IL – July 1, 2025 – LanzaJet, Inc., a leading next-gen fuels technology company and producer of sustainable fuels, today announced that the company has been selected to participate in Nature Positive Initiative 2025 State of Nature Metrics Pilot Program along with Gentian and RAW Biofuels.
Out of hundreds of applicants worldwide, our working partnership is 1 of only 32 selected teams – spanning 6 sectors and all continents – chosen as the only renewable biomass and fuel organizations to test the applicability, relevance and scalability of a draft set of universal State of Nature metrics.
Why does this matter: Nature-based risks – including ecosystem degradation, biodiversity loss, climate volatility and resource scarcity – pose direct financial risks to companies across sectors. From supply chain disruptions caused by deforestation and water stress, to declining productivity due to soil degradation, businesses increasingly face operational, regulatory and reputational risks tied to their dependence on nature.
To build resilient operations, companies must be able to identify, measure and manage their impacts and reliance on natural ecosystems. Understanding these dependencies is essential for mitigating risk, ensuring long-term value creation, securing resource availability and meeting growing investor, regulatory and customer expectations on ecosystem stewardship.
Each of our organizations bring a unique perspective to this program:
LanzaJet is a leading Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) technology and production company, leveraging the Alcohol-to-Jet pathway to decarbonize aviation.
Gentian applies AI and satellite imagery to map biodiversity, assess ecological risk and deliver actionable insights with industry-leading precision.
RAW Biofuels (part of RAW Energy) is a global leader in renewable energy solutions with its Hybrid Tropical Grass (HTG) cultivation – a high-yielding sustainable feedstock, with a carbon cycle measured in days, delivering carbon-negative solid and liquid fuels.
Together, we aim to explore how nature-based metrics can be embedded in renewable fuel supply chains – especially in how feedstock is sourced and assessed, and our ability to deliver regenerative outcomes across our value chains.
“LanzaJet’s involvement in the Nature Positive Initiative’s pilot program is a critical next step toward bringing impact claims and nature-based solutions into the world of SAF,” said Daniel Bloch, Director of Strategic Partnerships at LanzaJet. “With credible, practical, and scientifically backed nature metrics, SAF producers and their feedstock partners can demonstrate how their supply-chains underpin long-term activities that directly enable a series of critical non-carbon benefits across ecosystem health, biodiversity, soil productivity, water quality, air quality, and more. These outcomes are complementary to the existing delivery of circular, renewable fuels, which these supply-chains already enable.”
This pilot aligns with the growing global momentum following the United Nations’ Kunming-Montréal Global Biodiversity Framework (2022), calling for measurable progress to halt and reverse nature loss by 2030.
Through this study, we hope to:
Evaluate the viability of the draft metrics for real-world renewable fuel project application;
Contribute insights to the development of global nature measurement standards eg. Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD), Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), and Science Based Targets Network (SBTN); and
Inspire broader adoption of transparent, science-based nature reporting.
“The pilot program plays directly into the growing understanding from business and governments alike that all sustainability and carbon goals are inextricably linked with ecosystem health,” said Bloch. “Nature-based solutions will be absolutely central in achieving global climate goals, as they themselves are simultaneously the most climate resilient solutions, with enhanced capabilities to withstand increased prevalence of extreme weather events and natural disasters, and directly deliver healthier ecosystems which are all but essential in keeping carbon stored underground and natural services continuing to yield outputs that our society relies upon. We’re excited to contribute to this critical work, helping define how the private sector can take credible, measurable action for nature!”
